What is F9? |
F9 is a Financial Reporting application which dynamically links
General Ledger (GL) data to Microsoft Excel. By employing a
combination of simple cell formulas in Excel, F9 allows any GL
data to be formatted into any desired financial report in the
flexible and powerful environment of the spreadsheet.
F9 offers an unbeatable feature package including, drill down,
multiple date ranges, multi-currency, lists of account segments,
and report auditing. It also does all of this while being
dynamically Hotlinked to the General Ledger (GL), ensuring that
all numbers are timely, consistent and complete.
But that’s not all.
F9 provides all of the necessary tools for creating production
reporting and ad hoc reports within Microsoft Excel, which makes
F9 not only a superb tool for creating financial reports, but also
for financial analysis. Charts, graphs, pivot tables – all of
these features are available in the latest versions of Excel, and
all are compatible with F9.
This means that any analytical tool you use in Excel (graph,
chart, or pivot table), that is linked to the GL by F9, can be
updated at any time without rebuilding. Need to create a graph
charting weekly sales growth? Create it once in Excel utilizing
F9’s GL Function. To update it, simply extend the date range to
include the last week, and press F9 (recalc). The graph will
automatically be updated to include that week with the most recent
data from the GL. |

How
does it work? |
F9 adds a series of new spreadsheet formulas
(functions) that behave like any other spreadsheet formula. They
return a value to a cell in your sheet based on the parameters
that you provide. For example, using the above stated example and
F9's GL formula in Microsoft Excel, the formula may look like
either of the following:
=GL("Sales-MidWest-Widgets-Blue","January") or;
=GL("4000-A,C,D-100-200","Month 1")
F9 can deal with
either request.
NB: The parameters of these formulas are displayed as
such for illustration only. Typically, each parameter in the
formula would contain a cell reference to the value indicated in
quotation marks.
This is just one F9 formula. There are several others that
return information such as account descriptions, account segment
descriptions, company names, dates, etc. And formulas are only
part of F9's functionality.
There are a number of other features such as Drill Down that
allows you to determine the origin of a particular number, Budget
Write Back that allows you to modify and update your budget files,
Wizards to create GL formulas or entire reports, and many other
features designed to make you more productive.
